It is not a problem to read the JPEG files, certainly.
What I wanted to point out is that JPEG is a lossy format blurring the edges of letter in the scanned text pages, while PNG would be a lossless format keeping them sharp. Certainly at the cost of bigger file size.
Do you have the images in grayscale PNG format?
Storing scanned text in JPEG format does not seem to be the best decision quality wise…
